Industrial Biotechology
Industrial biotechnology today is remaking the economy. From the Economist to the OECD, global experts identifying a shift form the "fossil-based" to the "bio-based" economy.
Challenges facing industrial biotechnology in Canada
Biofuels
Second and third generation biofuels convert non-useable biomass such as waste, construction materials or dedicated crops, into cleaner burning alternative fuels that meet our next generation energy needs. Investment in next generation bio-fuels technology is important to develop a sustainable bio-economy. The $500 million dollar SDTC Next Gen Fund must be broadened to support the diverse processes involved in the production of second and third generation bio-fuels and their co-products.
Dedicated Crops
New and improved crops specifically dedicated to biofuels are being introduced and grown by farmers across North America. Currently, the Canadian approval process for such “novel crops” is lengthy. BIOTECanada encourages the government to facilitate the introduction of important biofuels crops for facilitate efficient fuel production by creating a regulatory process that allows for the timely and effective introduction of biofuel crops into the Canadian environment.
