BIOTECanada is working with governments to build the bio-based economy. We urge governments to:
ECONOMY
- Recognize that biotechnology is central to economic recovery for Canadians. BIOTECanada has proposed an action plan to provide bridge funding for our companies in this difficult time
REGULATORY POLICY
- Maintain science-based regulation, and establish regulatory practices that enable the discovery, commercialisation and market introduction of all biotechnology products and processes.
- Ensure adequate IP protection for Canadian innovators
VACCINES
- Create a predictable process and sustained funding for existing and new public vaccine programs.
HEALTH BIOTECHNOLOGY
- Ensure that pricing regulations and guidelines for bio-pharmaceuticals in Canada generate market competition ensure patient access to new innovative therapies
- Preserve patient safety and incentives for creation of innovative biologic therapies by amending legislation before allowing introduction of Subsequent Entry Biologics into Canada.
- Adopt a national Orphan Product Policy to provide treatment options for the devastating rare diseases affecting Canadians.
- Pursue regulatory transparency through open public meetings of the regulatory bodies that make decisions about Canadians' health.
INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
- Increase support for clean energy by broadening available funding to include bio-fuels and bio-fuel co-products.
AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
- Ensure adequate IP protection for second generation agricultural products and technologies.
- Maintain science -based and internationally competitive regulation for plant biotechnology.
- Adopt a competitive position on the regulation of cloned animals and their progeny that conforms to our major trading partners.
