EnWave Corporation - 2011 Early Stage Company of the Year - Ind.&Ag
EnWave Corporation is an industrial technology company developing commercial applications for their Radiant Energy Vacuum (REV) dehydration technology. Since 2006, they have developed or acquired the rights to six REV platforms for high-speed drying of food, bulk liquids, and pharmaceuticals. EnWave’s commercial nutraREV™ technology is used in the food industry to produce high-quality dried fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats and seafood more quickly and less expensively than conventional methods. EnWave is also developing powderREV™ for the bulk dehydration of food cultures, probiotics and fine biochemicals such as enzymes. EnWave’s newest prototype is quantaREV™, a high-volume low-temperature continuous platform for the dehydration of pastes, gels, liquids, or particulates. The com¬pany’s proprietary bioREV™ and freezeREV™ technologies are also under development for the stabilization and dehydration of biopharmaceuticals in vials. In April 2009, EnWave announced a collaboration with Danisco AS, a global player in the production of food cultures and fine bio¬chemicals, to develop their prototype pow¬derREV™ technology, and in July 2010, the Company entered into an R&D Agreement with a subsidiary of Nestlé SA involving nutraREV™ technology. EnWave also has collaboration agreements with Grimmway Farms, the world’s leading producer of organic carrots and vegetables, to evaluate quantaREV™ technology, and with Grupo Bimbo SA, the world’s largest producer of baked goods to evaluate nutraREV™. The Company plans to expand their current list of multinational collaborators for each of the platforms, with the goal of achieving their first commercial license agreement by the end of 2011.
CO2 Solutions Inc. - 2010 Early Stage Company of the Year - Ind.&Ag
Quebec City’s CO2 Solution Inc. is tackling one of the greatest energy and environmental related challenges facing the globe today: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of coal and from other fossil fuels which provide most of the world’s energy.CO2 Solution's technology is based on a naturally-occurring enzyme, carbonic anhydrase, responsible for carbon dioxide management in humans and other mammals. Based on the ability of this enzyme to convert one million molecules per second of CO2 into bicarbonate, it is considered to be the fastest catalyst available to increase the efficiency of commercial CO2 capture systems.
CO2 Solution has been working to adapt this natural mechanism for industrial gas scrubbing. By introducing the enzyme catalyst into conventional gas scrubbing systems, as an enabling technology, a retrofit solution is achieved which is compatible with existing processes and can reduce total costs by 30% or more. As the power generation industry and other emissions-intensive sectors search for cost effective solutions to manage their carbon emissions, CO2 Solution’s enzymatic platform is positioned as a transformational technology for carbon capture and storage (CCS), enabling currently high cost chemical processes to be dramatically more efficient.
In 2009, the company reached a key milestone, signing a Joint Development Agreement with Codexis, Inc. of Redwood City, California, a leader in the design and large-scale production of “super enzymes” for harsh industrial processes. Through this exclusive agreement, Codexis will provide its evolved carbonic anhydrases to further advance CO2 Solution’s process towards commercialization.
Zymeworks Inc. - 2009 Early Stage Company of the Year - Ind.&Ag
Zymeworks is a privately-held computational biotechnology company based in Vancouver. It was founded in the spring of 2004 and grown from two graduate students to 18 employees. Zymeworks has developed a leading-edge molecular simulation platform for protein modeling and structure-guided optimization with the unique ability to relate the function and biophysical characteristics of a protein to the its structure. This proprietary technology enables Zymeworks to make knowledge- based structural modifications that result in new or improved functional properties.Zymeworks plans to address the market need for highly specific and targeted protein therapeutics through strategic collaborations and by developing a protein therapeutics pipeline. The company’s unique advantage is that it can create novel second generation therapeutics by improving failed or stalled pharmaceutical assets, or by generating greatly improved versions of existing marketed biologics. This approach is independent of therapeutic indication, opening up a wide range of partnering and in-licensing opportunities. Moreover, by executing on its pipeline development strategy, Zymeworks is positioned to leverage existing preclinical and clinical data, in combination with its ability to predict failure and optimize biophysical characteristics, to generate therapeutics with a greater chance of clinical success, in a shorter timeframe, and with fresh intellectual property protecting a new molecular entity.
Achievements:
- Closed a $1.35 million financing round in January 2008.
- Signed a research agreement with DSM for enzyme engineering. DSM is one of the world’s largest fine and specialty chemical producers.
