BIOTECanada welcomes the federal government’s recognition of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals as strategic capabilities in Canada’s new National Security Strategy. This is an important step in recognizing the role biotechnology plays in Canada’s health, economy, security and sovereignty.
Across the country, BIOTECanada members are developing new therapies, vaccines, technologies, advancing manufacturing, and building companies that demonstrate the breadth and value of Canada’s biotechnology sector.
The strategy points to biomanufacturing, essential medicines and biologics, regulatory modernization and secure health supply chains as areas of focus, with further implementation details still to come. As the government moves this work forward and expands engagement with strategic sectors, BIOTECanada looks forward to ensuring Canada’s biotechnology sector has a strong voice in that process.
This, alongside of the government’s inclusion of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and essential medicines in its list of strategic industries under the Canada-EU Alliance for the Future, underlines the growing recognition by the Government of Canada of the pivotal role that life sciences play in shared economic and health sovereignty.
